Two Harbors Designated 'Bike Friendly'

March 20, 2025
In 2025, the City of Two Harbors was recognized as a Bronze Bike Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists (the League). This shows significant improvements since the city’s 2015 application, when Two Harbors received just an honorable mention.
"This award is a well-deserved recognition of the hard work our staff and partners have put into making Two Harbors a better place to bike, walk, and live," City Administrator Patty Nordean said.
Many of us have a memory of a great experience as a pedestrian or bicyclist. The paths felt safe and took you where you needed to go. Maybe there were trees providing shade and colorful murals. You could find your way easily and didn’t feel threatened by fast-moving cars.
Thousands of decisions, big and small, go into making a community bikeable or walkable. Bike Friendly designations recognize these efforts while also giving municipalities action steps to improve.
The Two Harbors Bike Friendly Coalition, a group of community partners led by the Statewide Health Improvement Partnership (SHIP) Coordinator Lareesa Sandretsky, came together in 2023 to make improvements and apply for the designation.
The award recognizes changes including training elementary school teachers to teach bike safety and hosting a bike rodeo in 2024 to teach bike skills, tune up bikes and give out helmets. The city’s infrastructure has improved too, with more than a dozen new bike racks funded by SHIP and installed by Two Harbors Public Works. Roads and trails have also been strengthened, making the city more connected and keeping cyclists and pedestrians safe.
The Bike Friendly Coalition will reconvene in 2025 to review the feedback from The League and develop an action plan to move Two Harbors towards even more progress.
