Our Main Goal

health equity

The common belief is that good health is due to quality medical care and personal choices, but the reality is that what surrounds us, shapes us. Where we live, work, learn, and play affect our health in many ways.‍

Health equity means that everyone has a fair and just opportunity to be as healthy as possible, which requires:

  • Valuing every person and their health

  • Improving conditions that can harm people’s health
  • Working with different groups in specific, sensitive ways to address health issues that affect them

Where SHIP Works

SHIP is centered in the communities we serve. SHIP Coordinators live, work, and play alongside their families, friends, and neighbors across the Northeast. And partnerships are at the heart of what we do. Together with schools, workplaces, community and healthcare organizations, we work to make changes to policies, systems, and environments (PSE) that will improve the quality of life for everyone.

Communities

Prevention in the community setting is important to address problems before they start. SHIP works on the community level to improve quality of life for all residents.

Health Care

Addressing proactive measures to promote health, detect and manage diseases early, and reduce the risk of disease.

Schools

By investing in prevention, schools can create safer and more supportive environments, fostering the well-being of students, staff, and the entire school atmosphere.

WorkPlaces

Workplaces play a crucial role in promoting health and well being by providing opportunities for physical activity, health eating, active living, and stress reduction.

Our Initiatives

What this means for you

Local public health agencies and community organizations are helping to reduce the risk of chronic disease by focusing on:

Active Living

Active Living

Active living is for everyone. It’s easy to get all the physical activity you need to be healthy when active living is built into the world around you. That means having access to daily opportunities to move: walking or biking to work or school, parks and playgrounds near your home, and accessible hiking trails, for example.

Healthy Eating

Healthy Eating

Too many people in the Arrowhead region of Minnesota cannot find fresh fruits and vegetables near their homes, or what they can find is limited and expensive. Therefore, SHIP works with communities to increase access to and consumption of fruits and vegetables through farmers markets, healthy corner store initiatives and community gardens.

Tobacco Free

Tobacco Free

Living commercial tobacco free is one of the most impactful choices you can make to improve your health, live longer and protect those around you! It also means minimizing your exposure to secondhand smoke where you live, work and play.

Well Being

Well Being

Mental wellbeing includes things like our emotions and moods, feelings of satisfaction and fulfillment, the experiences that shape us as children, and whether we have more good mental health days than bad. SHIP works to support policies, systems, and environments that help ensure everyone can experience positive mental wellbeing.

Lactation Support

Lactation Support

Lactation provides numerous benefits for both parents and babies. For mothers, it can help reduce the risk of postpartum depression, breast and ovarian cancer, and osteoporosis. For babies, lactation provides essential nutrients, antibodies, and protection against infections.
